Piranha Photography – What’s in store for 2022?

Happy New Year and here’s to 2022. In the words of John Lennon, ‘Let’s hope it’s a good one.’

For us, the last four months of 2021 was our busiest ever after almost 30 years in business. Before the new Covid restrictions came in at the tail end of the year, clients large and small were commissioning corporate photoshoots like mad as they attempted to cram in as many as possible of their photography projects they had been forced to postpone during the previous 18 months. Our email was virtually ringing off the hook.

But with the Christmas lull in proceedings, we decided to take stock and spend time looking at workflows and putting in place what we would need to improve our service for the year ahead.

New MacPros and laptops

Our first and most obvious task was to upgrade all of our MacPro’s. While these are incredibly reliable workhorses they were in need of a speed boost. So out they went and in came new M1 MacMini’s.

The result was amazing. All of our apps now boot up instantly and processing is now ultra-quick on all files. More to the better, they actually consume far less power. In fact, the backup UPS power supplies now barely register a flicker of power consumption, whereas before it was 40 – 50% load. It feels good to be burnishing our eco credentials while saving money.

Out too went our previous laptops, to be replaced with new even more powerful Apple M1 Max chip varieties. This means when we are shooting on location, we can turn images round so much faster.

New Leica SL camera for photographer in 2022

And a new Leica SL2-S camera

We also decided to pension off our older Leica SL. As you know well, Piranha is Leica’s number one fan boy, so we weren’t moving to a different brand, but upgrading to a new Leica SL2-S camera. Of course, it provides the same sublime images but these are even cleaner and sharper (which you’d hardly think possible!) and are noise free at all ISOs, which means that we can shoot in near darkness without flash, and yet have a wider colour range and faster processing times too.

A faster, greener year ahead

All in all, we are very happy with our sleeker, greener, more powerful office hardware that means we can turn photographs around to clients so much more quickly and with even more accurate colour. And when working on non-studio assignments, we can process images on location when needed and with our extremely fast new laptops.

All I have to do now personally is maintain the resolve to stick to a dry January. So far so good on this front too.

We very much look forward to working with you again this year, and hope your business is poised to make 2022 one to remember for all the right reasons.
