What’s in store for 2023?

M11 Leica camera for professional photographer

The new Leica M11 camera

A new star is born – the Leica M11

When you thought it was safe to leave the credit card at home on a trip to the Leica Store, along comes its new camera, the M11 .

To all intents and purposes looking at it nothing much has changed when compared with its predecessor, the almost identical Leica M10 . So why the excitement and my need to break out the credit card?

First, the M11’s sensor is completely new and yields a 60 megapixel image which is absolutely huge. Its resolution is much more akin to a medium format camera rather than a small 35mm one, which means if you need a large group photographed and still want to be able to zoom in on their eyelashes then this is the camera for the job.

If you marry the M11 with the appropriate lenses that ensure the colours are true and the images crisp from corner to corner, then it’s no exaggeration to say that the image quality is truly stunning. Impossible to believe, but the dynamic range and colour accuracy have been enhanced too.

Secondly, the shutter has been almost silenced, not that the M10’s is especially loud but it makes a sharper ’snick’ noise, which can be noticeable when photographing in quieter settings such as art galleries or board meetings.

For me, I am confident that any corporate event now can be covered using a 50mm lens on the M11, a 35mm lens on the M10 and a wider scene-setter lens, the 21mm.

The beauty of Leica cameras and lenses is that I don’t need flash when photographing at events. In over 20 years of professional photography I have avoided flash at all costs because guests and clients find it distracting and it spoils the great atmosphere in beautifully lit, darkened rooms. My Leica cameras and lenses are so well engineered they make flash redundant.

OK, I could have saved some cash by not splashing out on the M11, but with all its the advantages, it’s money well spent and the results speak for themselves.
